They gave up on trying to blend blues and garage rock, (largely) ditching the former and doubling down on the latter. Petty’s lyrics have never been darker. He’s soul-searching on the banks of the “Red River” and jabs at the “Shadow People” of America. Is “Forgotten Man” introspection? If so, the music provides little incentive for sympathy. The Heartbreakers gush tribute to the '60s so profusely that by the second half of the album, the slow tempo songs feel tired and predictable. Petty can still crank out a great tune, but the drawn-out exhibitions get him in trouble: make your point and move on.
